The man behind RockofAJs, is self taught artist and stay at home dad from Texas, Anthony James Rojas. Being called “AJ” since birth; AJ, RockofAJs, and his art only became one because of random unforeseen circumstances that occurred throughout his life. Not picking up his first paint brush until very recently, it all began with an idea he had about visualizing common everyday objects out of the unique and irregular characteristics of broken pieces of limestone rock. While painting the objects he would see in the limestone, he began to unravel a mystery of unique proportions not only within his paintings, but within himself and the artist he strives to be.
AJ harnesses techniques from the Abstract Expressionism and Cubism movements of the 20th century, and creates abstract paintings that touch on individual characteristics of Modernism and Surrealism. Utilizing a deep seeded natural ability to handle colors, he paints canvas and limestone in search of clues to the mysteries behind his art, as well as clues to the fundamental mechanisms behind the natural beauty of Abstract Art and the way it affects our individual psyche. His preferred medium is oil based paints and the main points of emphasis in his paintings are irregular shapes and curves, geometric shapes and lines, and color that tell a story from deep inside his unconscious mind. AJ believes the most important underlying aspect of his art is color choice and placement, because, “without color, we would all be blind”.
